The Re-Islamization of Bangladeshi Society
The political history of Bangladesh, complex and contradictory, dismantles all the fantasies held today about Islam, erected as a global enemy taking over from defunct communism. The country became independent in 1971 after a deadly liberation war that saw its Muslim population clash from Pakistan, created by the British ex-colonizer of India as a Muslim nation. Its government claimed to be secular before promoting Islam as the State religion and initiating a deep re-Islamization of society. Today this Islamic military dictatorship headed by the Awami League, the former independence party, has regularly liquidated all its political oppositions in the name of the global anti-terrorist fight.

Iran and its (Mis) Representation
Iran (especially post-revolutionary Iran) suffers twice from its misrepresentation. Not only has the gap widened within its borders between social diversity and the Islamic Republic installed since the revolution of 1979. In its perception outside, this revolution has also reactivated culturalist readings. In this article, we mobilize the concept of “representation”, in its political and aesthetic meanings, in order to draw another picture of the tensions between Iranian society and its State. The government’s blockage of democratic
representation has led Iranian society, in search of its image, to turn to increasingly aesthetic modalities. These sensibilities influence the political landscape, just as aesthetic representations are always susceptible to receive and carry political meaning. It is this conflict of images in the Iranian context that we are interested in.

Integration and Isolation
The Two Sides of the Iranian Revolution
The Iranian revolution of 1979 and its consequences should be analyzed using the concepts of “integration” (into the world capitalist system) and “isolation” (from the new world order). These two concepts allow us to better understand both the general and particular dimensions of this event. “Integration” emphasizes the general capitalist nature shared by all the so-called “Third World” or “peripheral” countries, while “isolation”, considered here as a moment of this “integration”, allows us to analyze the real and concrete characteristics that distinguish Iran from the other countries in the region. After analyzing these concepts in the post-revolutionary period in Iran, we focus on the role of the “urban poor” in the establishment of the Islamic Republic, but also on their change of position in recent years, which has led to massive demonstrations against the regime and its policies.

The Re-Politicization of Third Places
“Third places” (like fablabs) were originally defined as places of sociability, where people meet for the joy of being together. Globalized corporations (big commercial brands, car manufacturers, real estate developers and even… museums) have absorbed the concept in their marketing strategy to exploit it as a commercial opportunity. These firms offer places to reinvent consumer experience by providing a sense of community, under the guise of inclusive values. Third places are being commodified. However, the emergency caused by the Covid‑19 pandemic revealed solidarities that could only be weaved in third places. They have been the laboratory for mutual aid networks, telephone attention chains, food distribution, and the artisanal manufacture of medical equipment. They are re-appropriated through a process of re-politization.

The Myth of What We  Can Take In
Global Migration and the “Receptive Capacity” of  the  Nation-State
This article offers a critique of a relatively new concept that works to sanction the detention and exclusion of “irregular” migrants — namely, that the nation-state has a finite and objective “receptive capacity” for taking in foreigners, which, when surpassed, warrants militarized defense. Distinct from the more explicitly racist governmental rationalities that underwrote the inaugural immigration quotas in the United States, the notion of a national “receptive capacity” has a logic of its own in which ecology and economy are made fatally inextricable. Conceptions of a given territory’s “carrying capacity” developed in the context of American environmentalism as a means of regulating nonhuman game populations and subsequently transformed into a language for assessing the potential of emerging markets. Freud’s theory of psychic injury begins by postulating an infinite “receptive capacity”[Aufnahmefähigkeit] proper to the human perceptual system — an unbounded ability to take in what is external that is both the originary condition of embodied life and that which must be managed and regulated in order to survive. Freud’s speculations in Beyond the Pleasure Principle index and help to dissolve a mythopoetic conception of Life that has since become central to the anti-immigrant racial imaginary.

Towards a Theory of  Non-Scalability
Is it possible to change the scale of an activity without changing its nature? There is no doubt that a lot of phenomena change when we change their domain of extension. There is more than a difference of size between a garden of a few square meters and the alignment of greenhouses in a field of several hectars. Colonial modernity was remarkable in its desire for the scalability of production, and its model was the slavery-based Plantation: a system founded on the exploitation of human and non-human beings that are cut from their roots and their native environments in order to be extractible. The logic of economies of scale, the logic of expansion borrows its ideology to this history, and it is one of the reason it is necessary to oppose an antidote to it: the description and invention of non-scalable worlds, where agents are not interchangeable, where networks of dependance are local, situated and transformative for those who live in them and those who benefit from them.

Music in the Age of  Circulation
What does the globalized circulation of goods and people do to music? Two things, which are apparently contradictory: the uniformization of styles and means of production, on one side, and their constant renewal, on the other — an effect of the planetary contagion of sounds and the multiplication of local revisitings. In other words, the very movement that uniforms can sometimes be that which singularizes. This paradox leads us to unravel some threads, tracking different circulating objects — a digital device, a musical style, a group of practices — in order to seize the concrete modalities of their circulation. For circulation to occur, there is a need for connection, and connection doesn’t go without conflicts, feedbacks, rubbings and shriekings which all affect the circulating object. There is no circulation without friction, without feedback loop, and without a multitude of agents that allow for the transmission: we encounter the paths of noise musicians, and benders, shifters, makers, and repairers. These figures of global interconnectivity are also those who learn to slip into its cracks and amplify its differences.

No Oil,
Just Auto-Tune !
Cher, T-Pain, Saez, Châton, Booba, Benjamin Biolay, Bon Iver, Yung Beef, Lady Gaga, Neil Young, and PNL: these artists share a common practice — the use of Auto-Tune, a software that permits the adjustment or correction of the voice after its recording or performance. If initially Auto-Tune was used to correct the pitch, it now is also used to produce sound modulations that give a robotic, artificial, non-linear character to the human voice. The first recording to use Auto-Tune was Cher’s “Believe” in 1998: a direct hit. Since then, if some artists — like Jay-Z and its record D.O.A. for “Death of the Auto-Tune” (2009) — criticize the practice, Auto-Tune has conquered the music industry and is said to be used in most of the musical productions of today (Reynolds 2019) regardless of their aesthetic leanings. In spite of this broad circulation, there are few academic papers tackling its implications. What is at stake in Auto-Tune?

Standards, Critiques and  Oblique Uses of  Creation Software
Against the technological progressivist view that would construe CAD/DTP (Computer Aided Design/Desktop Publishing) as providing a simple mechanical supplement to creative possibilities, this paper proposes to understand CAD/DTP as accelerations — or even automations — of traditional crafts. Every day, designers use the same softwares, but do they know their histories and implications? How is this normalizing tendency inscribed in the history of the technical transformations induced by the development of computation? To envisage this, this paper provides a textual commentary of the leaflets accompanying some technical objects (from creation softwares to machines) going from the more standardizing to the most open. Each of these analyses is comprised of three subparts: a description of the standardizing aspect of the leaflet, a critique of the values it embeds, and its potential counter-uses in art and design.

Ideological Conflicts in French Art Schools
Artistic and aesthetic globalizations have various effects in the context of French art schools: they bring about debates concerning the normalization of artistic practices by the models of artistic achievement, they spur conflicts around new theoretical traditions — specifically antiracist, postcolonial, and decolonial studies — and they multiply interrogations concerning the neoliberal transformation of higher education. This paper offers a historical framing of the import of these new terminologies in art schools and a rendering of the ideological debates they provoke. What are the concrete effects of tacit systems of belief in art education and especially in the evaluation of young artists? Is it possible to avoid the double pitfall of, on the one hand, racializing art students or, on the other, of following a color-blind politics of recruiting that ignores the effects of structural racism?

News From the Segregated We
“There is no co-working without a community.” What is separating the we of the third spaces from the we of the start-up (more or less nationalized)? Is it possible to distinguish the off-ramps (of the dilated, of the diffracted, of the bifurcating we) from the highway (of the I of personal development, but also of this other we of team building and we designs)? The auto-affection of the pluralized self is an attempt, by a substitution of pronouns, to hide a not-so-secret intention to connect everybody to everybody. Investigating the reflections of these globalized “beautiful souls” in their aesthetic variations, this paper intends to think the reactualizations of world-integrated psychic standardization, in showing how they blur the we they refer themselves to. The starting point is a series of quotes from stars of the republic of letters. And it immediately shifts to forms of enunciatory deterritorializations, ways of coursing through a we attached to its own scalar uncertainty and excited by its own anachronisms: an original experience of the other as self, an alter-constructivist workshop, a self-decentering meditation, an anti-facilitating reunion, a counterpoint to the now.

Congo and Cuba
For a Re-Existence of Latitudes
Revisiting Ernesto Che Guevara’s little-known 1965 trip to the Congo from his Congo Diary, the article offers a decolonial reading of cooperation between Cuba and the Congo. Considered a military “failure”, this mission of support testifies both to an alliance of Third World countries, and to an anti-colonial and anti-imperial will to imagine possible alternative policies. It shows also the difficulties of making a common front and implanting in the Congo the Cuban Marxist ideal of the “new man”. In spite of this ambivalent situation, analyzed from Che’s diary and photographs, this military experience was a first Third World milestone in the affirmation of “multiple modernities”, which would not be subjected only to Western modernities, as shown in a description of the artistic exhibition of the Global South in Havana in 1989, conceived by the author as being closely related to Che’s dream.

Photographer, video artist, visual artist and cartoonist Michèle Magema analyzes her artistic practice, marked by exile and belonging to multiple territories. Metamorphosis, the All-World, the state of postcolony, the monstration of the female body: these are the motifs of her artistic work. Oyé Oyé is an installation mixing images of Mobutu’s parades and reconstitution by the artist of the gestural codes imposed on schoolchildren under the dictatorship. Under The Landscape reproduces and questions the political borders of the Congo. Evolve returns to the colonial category of “the evolved”. Remind me not to forget our dreamed territories questions the artist’s “return to the native country” after more than thirty years of absence. Michèle Magema defines her work as a creation of fiction, an exploration of the relations between the Congo, France and Belgium, a study of the political consequences of the globalized world on individuals.

Lubumbashi and the Idea of Oral Memory
The Memories of Lubumbashi project, created in 2000, with the aims at collecting oral sources on the history of this mining city (the second largest city in Congo and capital of Katanga) as well as pictorial sources and objects. The objective is to provide a counterpoint to written colonial sources, in order to draw a plural history of the city, by proposing a participatory and inclusive approach to the inhabitants. Life stories of the workers of the Mining Union of Haut-Katanga during the colonial period, stories also of their companions and their daughters, too often forgotten in historical investigations, family photographs, popular theater creations in Kiswahili (especially from the Mufwankolo troupe) that evoke the daily life of colonization, repertoires of popular songs are all examples of this large collection. The author invites us to a conception of history in connection with the citizens, attached to writing the daily lives of the “voiceless”.

Covid‑19
Oxymora of Totems and Signs of Life in Kinshasa
The author analyzes the verbal and non-verbal signs, as well as the rituals integrated into dominant and common discourses in response to the Covid‑19 pandemic in Kinshasa, between March and May 2020. “Mask”, “barrier-gesture”, “lockdown” are read in turn through their resonances in Lingala or within the recent history of Congo. The author shows their oxymoronic uses, where antithetical meanings are grafted onto the official discourse, contradicting or in any case twisting it. The author also discusses the measures taken by the government to fight the pandemic, the impossible lockdown of Kinshasa, the rise in prices, the high-profile media coverage of politicians and churchmen, and the dramatic social consequences for the poorest. Finally, the author invites us to a “praise of slowness” and to a “policy of care”: the last paradoxical positivity of the virus.

“A” for America, Amazonia and Bees
“Latin America” is a name with a colonial past that does not reflect the diversity of this huge continent. Daring to redesign Latin America here means opening up possibilities rather than concluding projects. It envolves revisiting in quick lines the history of the formation of nation-states and the recent consequences of national-developmentalism. Secondly, presenting some biopolitical initiatives in the tangle of a biozone shared by several Latin American nations. Finally, following the “stingless bees” from the forest to the city and, at the end of the road, thanks to their pollination and swarming, perceiving the contours of an Amazonian ZAD in formation.
