Political Grandmotheroods
The article intends to constitute the grandmother as a central figure of transmission, as a radical political figure: a figure of narrative, a figure of continuity of memory where colonization has undermined the authority of paternal lineages. Moving away from a narrative that thinks of colonization as a symbolic castration of fathers, the author questions female lineages and their power of transmission of narrative and memory frames. The grandmother is set up as a political force, capable of undoing patriarchal authority and recreating broken ties. The strength of the “little stories” told by grandmothers in the face of the defeats of the “big story” of fathers: such is the power of political self-fabulations that invent themselves beyond or against normative identities, and produce new political imaginaries.

Fertile Trees Near the Source
Artist Sarah Ndele mixes a reflection on her own practice, nourished by Yombé art, with a plea for the renewal of art education in the Congo that would include a history of classical African art. Sarah Ndele explains how her own mask creations question the fracture inherited from colonization, which broke down intergenerational transmissions, producing “gaps” in memory. In her work, plastic has replaced wood and the vegetable materials of the masks of yesteryears; the melting of recovered plastic forms “tears”, which she combines with the desire to recompose herself through her art. The performances, realized within a collective of Kinshasa artists, invest the street and the public space to question the passers-by on sometimes sensitive political issues. This collective practice of performance is linked to a whole African cultural heritage, defended by the artist.

Ré-enchanter l’Afrique, par et

Ré-enchanter l’Afrique

Re-Enchanting Africa
During this interview conducted by Yala Kisukidi, Achille Mbembe returns to the key themes of his book Brutalism (2020): the definition of the idea of “Africa”, the need to get out of a “history of predation” and to reinvest utopias through “re-enchantment”, the revaluation of a “policy of care” in our damaged lands, the creation of an african space of free movement, all these themes are discussed in turn. Convening the writers Amos Tutuola and Sony Labou Tansi, Mbembe underlines the role of the imaginary, and particularly of literature, in the making of tomorrow’s utopias. Art, understood as a reserve of life and possibilities, constitutes a resource for thinking about contemporary migrations and imagining alternative models to the current neo-liberal model. Faced with the criminalization of circulation, the plundering of resources, the violence of contemporary “brutalism”, Mbembe calls for a “politics of care” capable of including, from Africa, the question of the common and the sharing of the Earth.

“A” for America, Amazonia and Bees
“Latin America” is a name with a colonial past that does not reflect the diversity of this huge continent. Daring to redesign Latin America here means opening up possibilities rather than concluding projects. It envolves revisiting in quick lines the history of the formation of nation-states and the recent consequences of national-developmentalism. Secondly, presenting some biopolitical initiatives in the tangle of a biozone shared by several Latin American nations. Finally, following the “stingless bees” from the forest to the city and, at the end of the road, thanks to their pollination and swarming, perceiving the contours of an Amazonian ZAD in formation.

Amazonie Sentinelle

Amazonia Sentinel
This article highlights a particular form of power in the process of colonisation of South America. The expeditions of the bandeirantes differed from the pastoral power of the Jesuit missions as well as from mining or territorial occupation by establishing a hunting regime whose main targets were the indigenous peoples. It served as a counterweight to sovereign power and Western humanism. Today, the technological dimension of biopolitics gives rise to a semiotics of hunting (capture of signs). The author underlines the importance of the Amazonian forest as a reservoir of signs, and the position that certain institutions and movements exercise, as sentinels of democracy, in opposition to Bolsonaro’s authoritarian and predatory populism.

The Strategy of the Multitude in Chile
Between the Bio-Politics of Hibernation and Necopolitics
The southern spring in Chile was the scene of a great uprising that put an end to Piñera’s neoliberal policy while criticizing the constitutional framework, a legacy of the Pinochet era. Initially, the movement was a metropolitan strike against the increase in the price of public transport tickets. In the face of the repression that followed the strike, it turned into an uprising of the multitudes for democracy and a new system of social protection. Even institutional attempts at mediation do not seem to be successful in blocking the movement, which nevertheless went into hibernation because of the pandemic. But the result of the plebiscite for a new constituent shows that the country is emancipating itself from the Pinochetist framework.
