Inconscient technologique et connaissances positionnelles

Cet article donne une première description de notre « inconscient technologique », terme qui désigne les formes basiques de positionnement et de juxtapositionnement qui rendent possible la « structure atomique » de base de la vie contemporaine en Amérique du Nord et en Europe. Il montre comment, au cours des dernières années, la mise en pratique de ces grilles de repérage ont évolué au fil d’une standardisation considérable de nos espaces, standardisation qui a conduit graduellement à la cristallisation d’un nouveau type d’inconscient technologique. L’article analyse l’émergence de quelques-uns des appareils à travers lesquels cet « inconscient technologique » structure aujourd’hui notre expérience du quotidien : l’adressage postal, le code-barres, la carte SIM, la puce RFID.

The Technological Unconscious

This paper provides a description and preliminary analysis of the current “technological unconscious”. I use this term to signify the basic forms of positioning and juxtapositioning which make up the basic “atomic structure” of contemporary Euro-American life. I argue that in recent years the practice of these templates has been changing as a full-blown standardisation of space has taken hold. This standardisation is gradually leading to the crystallisation of a new kind of technological unconscious. I further argue that the traces of this new kind of unconscious are taking hold in social theory as well, leading to the assumption of a quite different event horizon which can be thought of as a different kind of materiality.
